Every Listener is asked to give just 2 hours each week, and you have the flexibility to select your slot to suit your availability.

We call each listening shift a 'watch' because we are on watch with the Lord.

New Listeners attend an online 8-week preparation programme (2 hours a week) that helps you confidently perform the listening role in the way the Lord has commissioned. You will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to handle every type of call.

You will excel as a volunteer if:

• You listen to the Lord at all times when on watch.  He is present in every call/email interaction, and you can then respond to the callers in the way the Lord guides.
• You are a compassionate listener.
• You do not judge, preach or give advice when listening.

We will cover every aspect of the role during the Listener Preparation Programme and make sure you can fulfil your role with confidence.

Before each listening watch, the Listeners get together on Zoom to pray and invite the Lord in. Then, during the watch, calls are forwarded to your mobile phone, landline or PC. You would listen attentively and compassionately to each caller's situation, and encourage them to pray to the Lord, who is always present. After the watch, the Listeners regather and pray once more for the callers they spoke to during the watch and commit them to the Lord.

Callers come from a wide variety of situations, of all ages and backgrounds. Callers often talk of bereavement, isolation or loneliness, anxiety or depression, their doubts and loss of faith, and sometimes even about taking their own life. We understand many of the themes touched upon here can be uncomfortable, but we will cover each theme extensively during the Listener Preparation Programme, so that you feel confident handling all situations. Remember that the Lord is always on the watch with us and always guides us, and there is always experienced support available.

You have access to a more experienced Watch Support at all times during your watch. You can instantly message them for advice or ask them to listen in, so that, if  you need support dealing with any call, caller or situation, you know that you are never left alone or unsupported.

The technology used by New Kapporet volunteers in watches is very simple, and will be covered extensively in the Listener Preparation Programme. You will have a step-by-step instructional video and document to follow, and have a designated mentor to reach out to for any questions you might have.
